As the new year rolls in, many people set resolutions with high hopes. Perhaps you want to get more exercise, eat better, read more, start a new hobby, or pursue some other avenue to self-improvement. Unfortunately, keeping resolutions can be a challenge. But don’t lose hope! With the help of some practical tips, you can set realistic New Year’s resolutions and stick to them throughout the year.
1. Plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute to set a hasty goal you haven’t had a chance to really think through. Give it some thought before New Year’s Eve arrives to be sure you’ve made the right choice.
2. Set an attainable goal. The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make it unrealistic. For instance, resolving to never eat your favourite snack food again might just set you up for failure. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as cutting back to a reasonable degree.
3. Make a “pros” list. Keep your motivation strong by making a list of reasons why you made your resolution in the first place. That way, you can consult your list when you need help keeping your resolve.
4. Be ready for temptation. Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece of cake. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk, or having an easy way to distract yourself.
5. Offer yourself a reward. Celebrate your success in sticking to your goal by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you’ve been sticking to your promise to exercise more, for example, reward yourself with some new fitness clothing.
6. Track your progress. Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help motivate you further. For example, keeping a food journal or using tools such as fitness trackers or apps can help you stay on track.
7. Talk about it. Don’t keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other.
8. Be patient. It can take a couple of months for a new activity to become a habit that feels like a normal part of your day. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient!
9. Be kind to yourself. Beating yourself up over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day and take it one day at a time, celebrating the wins along the way.
10. Don’t give up! If your resolution has totally run out of steam by mid-February, don’t despair. Just start over again! There’s no reason you can’t make a “New Year’s resolution” any time of year.
With the right strategy and consistent effort, you can make any resolution stick! Overcome the odds and make your resolution a lasting reality by keeping these tips in mind as the new year gets underway.
