Making a snow globe using a mason jar is a fun and straightforward DIY project that you can tackle with just a few basic materials. Whether you’re looking to create a personalized gift or add a festive touch to your home decor, this guide will walk you through the steps to create your own miniature winter scene.
Materials
- Mason jar with a tight-fitting lid
- Small figurines or decorations (such as trees or animals)
- Waterproof glue or epoxy
- Glycerin
- Distilled water
- Glitter
- White polymer clay (optional, for a snowy base)
- Ribbon or fabric (optional, for decoration)
Step 1: Design a Winter Scene
Select a figurine or set of figures that delight your winter spirit. This could be anything from a serene woodland creature or a vibrant Christmas tree to a playful snowman. Ensure your chosen items fit comfortably inside your mason jar when the lid is secured.
Step 2: Create a Snowy Base (Optional)
If you’d like to create a snowy landscape for your figurines, use white polymer clay to mould the terrain. Make sure it’s wide enough to accommodate your figurines and small enough to fit inside the jar. Bake the clay according to package instructions and allow it to cool completely before gluing it to the inside of the mason jar lid.
Step 3: Affix Your Figurine(s)
Using waterproof glue or epoxy, adhere your figurines securely to the inside of the mason jar lid or to your cooled, clay base. Allow ample drying time as per the adhesive’s instructions to ensure a firm bond.
Step 4: Let It Snow!
Add glitter to your mason jar. The amount is entirely up to you, but a couple of teaspoons is a good starting point. If you desire a heavier snowfall, feel free to sprinkle in a bit more!
Step 5: Fill It Up
Fill your mason jar nearly to the brim with distilled water. Add a dash of glycerin to help suspend the glitter and provide a more delightful, slow-falling snow when you shake your globe. A teaspoon should suffice for a standard-sized mason jar, but feel free to experiment with what works best for your chosen snow material.
Step 6: Seal It Up!
Screw the lid (with your attached figurines) onto your mason jar tightly. Before permanently sealing the jar, ensure you’re satisfied with the level of water, glycerin, and snow. Then, use waterproof glue to seal the lid to prevent leaks and let it dry thoroughly.
Step 7: Finishing Touches (Optional)
Wrap a charming ribbon or a piece of fabric around the lid for an extra festive touch. Not only does this add aesthetic appeal, but it also hides any visible adhesive left from sealing the lid.
And just like that, you’ve transformed a simple mason jar into a whimsical winter wonderland! Set it on your mantel and give it a shake whenever you are craving a snowy scene or give it as a gift to a loved one who appreciates the holidays as much as you do.
