Winter-Proof Your Roof: Essential Tips to Stop Ice Dams from Forming
Practical Ways to Protect Your Roof and Prevent Winter Ice Dams

Don’t let winter’s icy grip wreak havoc on your roof! With a few smart precautions, you can keep ice dams from forming, protect your home from leaks, and enjoy a worry-free winter season.

The last thing you want to discover in the middle of winter is an ice dam forming on your roof. Ice dams occur when heat escapes from your attic and causes the snow on the roof to melt. The snow then cools again when it reaches the edge of the roof, creating a barrier of ice that causes additional melting snow to back up behind it.

Not only can these frozen barriers lead to water leaks and costly repairs, but they can also compromise your roof’s structural integrity. Luckily, with some proactive measures, you can keep your roof clear and ice-dam-free all season long.

1. Ensure your attic is properly insulated

Insulation is essential for keeping your attic at a consistent temperature, which in turn is key for preventing ice dams. Proper insulation will keep warm air from escaping your living spaces, heating the roof, and causing snow to melt. Your attic should have a nice, deep layer of fibreglass or cellulose insulation installed to keep the heat where you want it.

Another crucial component of preventing heat loss through your attic is to make sure that any air leaks are sealed. Apply caulk or spray foam insulation around windows, lights, pipes, vents, and other fixtures and fittings where air could escape from.

2. Ensure your attic is properly ventilated

Ventilation is just as important as insulation when it comes to preventing ice dams. Proper attic ventilation ensures that fresh and cold air circulates throughout your attic to prevent the roof from warming up and melting the snow above. Inadequate ventilation can trap heat and worsen ice dam issues.

Check your attic vents to make sure that they are clear of debris and in good working order. You may even discover that you need to install new ridge and soffit vents to help create the necessary airflow for keeping ice dams at bay.

3. Clear snow off your roof

A heavy buildup of snow can quickly lead to ice dams forming on a roof if left unchecked. However, climbing on your roof, particularly in snowy and icy conditions, is dangerous and should be avoided.

The best way to deal with a large snowfall is with a roof rake. This long-handled tool is designed to clear snow from your roof while you remain safely on the ground. If this is not an option for you, then consider hiring a professional.

4. Maintain your gutters and downspouts

Clean, clear gutters and downspouts allow melting snow to drain properly from your roof. Clogged gutters, on the other hand, can trap water, which refreezes and exacerbates ice dam issues. Cleaning your gutters and downspouts in the fall and keeping them well-maintained over the course of the winter will prevent drainage issues, heading off ice dams and providing you with peace of mind.

The preparation it takes to prevent ice dams is worth it for a dry, damage-free home and fewer worries over the winter months. The right steps will keep ice dams at bay and ultimately help your roof stay in good condition for longer.
